Masking Magic Makeover

Spending a lot of time at home now is giving us an opportunity, like never before, to make a real change to our living space. Let’s surprise our loved ones by creating cheerful and beautiful decorations, using only unwanted bottles and materials you can find at home. VIVITA crew, Zhiru, shares this magical activity with us here.

How did you come up with the idea for your project?

I was at my grandparents’ home one day and I saw them using old glass coffee containers as a vase, without even removing the label, which I thought didn’t look very nice, so I decided to do a DIY using old food containers (which I’m sure we all have, especially from Chinese New Year).

What makes this a cool project?

You can make extra storage AND personalised storage 🙂

Could you share with us a bit about your prototyping process? What did you learn from the more memorable failed attempts?

Patience is important… Paint was involved in this project which means I have to wait for a layer to dry before painting the next layer, which was quite tortuous for me and quite a few times I painted the next layer before the layer underneath dried and the paint smudged…

Making Masking Magic

What materials do you need?

  1. An old container, preferably transparent (can be plastic or glass, but do be careful when handling glass as it is fragile)
  2. Beads and Buttons (optional, for further decoration)
  3. Making tape
  4. Newspapers – to protect whatever surface you’re working on

What tools do you need?

  1. Paint – can be spray paint or acrylic paint
  2. Paintbrush
  3. Palette
  4. Scissors/pen knife

Step 1: Remove any label on the container. TIP – If the label is very sticky, you can use an unwanted card to scrape it off.

Step 2: Use masking tape to mark out the areas you do not want paint on. The parts covered with tape will not be painted on, the parts not covered with tape will be painted on. TIP – For any shape other than a straight line, paste a few pieces of masking tape on top of each other in layers and cut out the shape that you want.

Step 3: Paint your desired colour over the unmasked areas. I used an egg carton to contain my paints as I couldn’t find my palette… Wait for a layer to dry before applying the next layer of paint. Add some silver polka dots as decoration. TIP – For polka dots, it would be easier to use the back end of the paintbrush.

Step 4: Remove the masking tape and you’re done 🙂

Use your new container to store your favourite things!

HINT – I used spray paint for a more even coating and used the original label as the “mask”

Can you make other objects using the same method?

Other types of containers could be vases, stationery holders, cups, etc

What other materials can you find around the house to decorate this? For example, beads, buttons, string, rope, fabric etc

What would you fill the containers with besides flowers?

Try and share the outcomes with us!
